MHCA seeks assurance construction workers can move across borders

April 20th, 2020

The MHCA has asked the provincial government to confirm that heavy construction workers will be able to move in and out of Manitoba, as an exception to mandatory 14-day self-isolation order imposed as of April 17. The public health order is available here.

The public health order, announced last Thursday, now stipulates that construction workers moving in and out of Manitoba, must self-isolate once in the province unless they are engaged in construction of “critical infrastructure.”

Manitoba Infrastructure is seeking clarification from the Chief Public Health Officer as to what is “critical” infrastructure.

Prior to the latest order, construction was listed as a critical service “broadly exempt from the public health orders, subject to specific limitations or requirements within the order.”

MHCA has asked that a working group be established with composed of individuals from Public Health, Manitoba Infrastructure, MHCA’s WORKSAFELY™ program and Winnipeg Construction Association’s CSAM to define the exemption for construction workers and services.

The MHCA will update members on the application of the order as information becomes available.
