Mayor lays out priorities for infrastructure chair in mandate letter

June 18th, 2020

Rebuilding Winnipeg’s roads is the top priority among the concerns laid out in Mayor Brian Bowman’s mandate letter to Coun. Matt Allard, chair of the Infrastructure Renewal and Public Works Committee. The letters were issued to the chairs of council’s committees June 18.

“Your primary goal as chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Infrastructure Renewal and Public Works will be to meet the needs of a growing population and economy, by rebuilding the city’s road and active transportation networks, and moving towards an increasingly efficient, well-functioning, and safe transit service,” the letter notes.

Other elements of Allard’s mandate include leading a historic six-year, $847-million regional and local road renewal program; continuing the funding partnership with the provincial government in support of the Municipal Infrastructure Research Chair at the University of Manitoba; continuing to find innovative ways to improve snow clearing; and, continuing expanding the city’s award-winning active transportation network.

Coun. Jeff Browaty, newly named as chair of the Water and Waste Committee, was issued the mandate to:

  • Oversee the ongoing combined sewer overflows investment in accordance with Provincial legislation, in a fiscally responsible manner;
  • Ensure the Public Service continues to work towards fiscally responsible options and partnership opportunities to improve the health and quality of our rivers;
  • Lead the implementation of the Winnipeg Climate Action Plan, in a fiscally responsible manner;
  • Freeze the water and waste dividend rate; and,

Lead and monitor upgrades to the North End and South End Sewage Treatment Plants.
