Manitoba’s third-quarter report shows infrastructure expenditure down

March 5th, 2020

Core infrastructure investment will be $80 million short of budgeted expenditures for 2019-20, according to the latest provincial fiscal update.

The third-quarter report states that expenditures for “roads, highways, bridges and flood protection” is estimated to hit $525 million, short of the $605 million budgeted in 2019.

The report bundles flood protection in with roads and bridges; in previous years it was reported on a separate line.

In a recent meeting with Finance Minister Scott Fielding, the MHCA was assured the expenditures for 2019’s Highways Capital program would be on target with budget estimates.

As well, Premier Brian Pallister issued mandate letters to his ministers Wednesday. The letter to Infrastructure Minister Ron Schuler repeats the government’s commitment to increase Highways Capital investment to $400 million over the next four years.

MHCA will attend the budget lock-up March 11, and send its analysis to members that afternoon.
