Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many industries are now experiencing an economic downtown, including architecture firms. Foster + Partners, one of the largest architecture firms in the United Kingdom, is the first major architecture studio to announce it is furloughing staff and issuing pay cuts, Building Design reports.

The international firm employs over 1400 people and has more than a dozen offices globally, according to Architects Newspaper.

“The safety of our people and the safeguarding of their livelihoods is at the heart of all our decisions. To help us in these aims, we have decided to furlough those people who are unable to carry out their work at home. Additionally we have asked all our staff worldwide to take a temporary pay cut of 20 percent for three months, with a minimum protected salary of £25,000. At this time we believe that these measures are the best way to help protect the practice,” said Matthew Streets, managing director at Foster + Partners, in a statement to Architects Newspaper.
